To help small and medium-sized enterprises open online stores, Amazon quietly acquired Australian e-commerce company Selz

Amazon

Amazon quietly acquired Selz, an e-commerce company from Sydney, Australia, more than a month ago. This is a company that helps small and medium-sized enterprises open online stores or introduce e-commerce tools. Amazon did not disclose the acquisition, but Selz announced it on his official blog and was reported by foreign media.

Selz was established in 2013 and is headquartered in Sydney, Australia. It provides many e-commerce services for small and medium enterprises. It can open its own online store, or add online payment functions and other tools to existing websites. According to the introduction on the LinkedIn page, the company has less than 50 employees.

Martin Rushe, the founder, and CEO of Selz announced through an official blog that he has signed an agreement to acquire Selz by Amazon and is looking forward to working with them. He also said that Selz will continue to create easy-to-use digital tools for small and medium-sized enterprises and that all services to customers have not changed.

An Amazon spokesperson also confirmed the transaction to foreign media CNBC but declined to disclose the amount of the acquisition.

Many stores were forced to close their doors to reduce the risk of contracting the new coronavirus. Consumers were unable to come to the stores to consume, and the store's products could not be sold. Therefore, both consumers and stores went online shopping. The change in consumption habits from offline to online not only brings more shopping choices to people, but also drives stores to continue to do business online, making the prospects of e-commerce services such as Shopify promising, and the stock price has continued to rise over the past year.

Jeff Bezos

In recent months, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has targeted competitors like Shopify. Amazon once had a Shopify-like service called Amazon Webstore, which allowed SMEs to open online stores using digital tools based on Amazon's e-commerce technology. However, Amazon has closed Amazon Webstore in 2015.

The acquisition of Selz will help Amazon continue to expand the market for small and medium-sized enterprises. While acquiring Selz, Marketplace, a third-party seller platform composed of more than 2.5 million sellers, continued to grow vigorously. Its revenue accounted for more than half of Amazon's e-commerce transaction volume and pushed Amazon's revenue to set a new record.
